The Privacy Act 2020
The Privacy Act 2020 (the Act) came into force on 1 December 2020, replacing the Privacy Act 1993. The Act strengthens privacy protections. It promotes early intervention and risk management by agencies (the name used for any organisation or person that handles personal information) and enhances the role of the Privacy Commissioner. What do you need to know?
The Privacy Act 2020 is based on 13 privacy principles that govern how you should collect, handle, and use personal information. Click here for a quick tour of the privacy principles. Use this guide to conduct a desk top audit of your current processes. Where gaps are identified set an action plan to address these issues as soon as possible.
Some businesses carry out staff surveys for performance reviews. The privacy principles apply to the information collected, so please do ensure your survey tools are fit for purpose before getting staff to complete them.
